Minutes of the Session

September 16, 2008


CLERK’S REPORT:

The minutes of the Stated Meeting of August 21, 2008 were approved with an exception.  The minutes of the Special Called Meeting of August 9, 2008 were approved as presented.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Robert Ward reported by written report on the meeting of the Central Florida Presbytery which he attended on September 9.

  • The members of the Long-range Planning Committee, to date, are Mike Reed and Mason Gibson, Elders; Duane McMillen and Paul Yost, Deacons.  The Presbyterian Women representative and the two at-large members should be in place in the next 30 days.

COMMISSION REPORTS:

Personnel - Mike Reed: No report.

OMEC – Mason Gibson: The commission requested in the form of a MOTION that the Treasurer create a new OMEC general expense account, with no budget, for the purpose of tracking expenses of the new entity called the Space Coast Oratorio Society. s/p

Property - Dan Coon: The closing of the sale of the manse failed to occur due to not being able to find the deed to the property.  Several avenues have been explored and there are others to be explored in the attempt to locate the necessary document.  The topic of speed bumps continues.

Stewardship & Finance – Dan Spellman: Written report received as information.

Care & Support – Cliff Schmitt: The commission requested in the form of a MOTION that the Elders implement a program of taking communion to the shut-ins of our church.  s/p  It was agreed that this will occur on the same dates as the congregation observes communion.

Education – Fred Robinson: Report received as information.

Fellowship – Jim Mustin: A very busy weekend is approaching as the Commission takes on the Men’s Breakfast on Thursday, October 2, the Fifth Quarter on Friday, October 3 and the first Family Breakfast Buffet on Saturday, October 4.  The Elders are urged to help in any way at any event.

Worship & Sacrament – Ann Stone: The discussion regarding the time change of the worship services and Sunday School continues by the commission.  Mike Reed has volunteered to gather more data from various sources.  Communion was observed on Sunday, September 7 serving 98 people at the 8:45 service and 110 people at the 11 am service.

BOARD OF DEACONS:

Report received as information.

NEW BUSINESS:

  • A new member class is set for September 28, 2008 at noon.  Penny Bernard’s Sunday School class will provide the lunch.

  • A MOTION was made to call a special meeting of the session for Sunday, October 4 at 10:15 am in Fellowship Hall for the purpose of approving the new members. s/p

  • Rev. Robinson has invited retired pastor, Bill Birdsall, to lead the session and the board of deacons in a workshop on the subject of stewardship.  The workshop will be on November 8, 2008.  Rev. Birdsall will preach at both services on November 9, 2008.

CLOSING BUSINESS:

  • The next meeting will be October 21, 2008
  • Devotion and prayer – Cliff Schmitt
  • Opening and Closing responsibilities for October – Mike Reed and Cliff Schmitt
  • The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm and closed with a corporate praying of the Lord’s Prayer
