Minutes of the Session

December 11, 2007 

The stated meeting of the session of Riverside Presbyterian Church was held on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 in Knox Parlor.  The elders present constituted a quorum.  Rev. Dan Robinson, moderator, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.  The meeting was opened with a devotional and prayer by S. Krizan.

Also present were Marilyn McMillen, representative from the PW Coordinating Team, AND Debbie Kamataris, staff.  M/S/C to grant them the privilege of the floor.  M/S/C to set adjournment for no later than 9:00 PM.

CLERK’S REPORT:

Minutes of the November 20, 2007 Stated Session Meeting combined with The Board of Deacons were approved as presented.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Rev. Robinson reported that a Parish Associate Relationship will be established with Bob Early.

  • A report from the December 4th meeting of Central Florida Presbytery was received from Elder delegates S. Krizan and J. Marshall.

COMISSIONS REPORTS:

Worship & Sacrament: A. Stone — In December communion was served to 108 at the Contemporary Worship Service and 163 at the Traditional Worship Service.  Thirty Riverside Presbyterian coffee mugs were given to first time visitors in November.  Fifteen units of blood were given at the last Blood Drive.  Ron Seeger will be in charge of securing ushers and greeters for the next three months.  Services on Christmas Eve will be held at 5:00 PM in Riverside Chapel and 7:30 PM in the Sanctuary.  B. Early will help with both services.  A recommendation to hold a brief worship service in Riverside Chapel on Christmas morning at 9:30 AM was approved.

Personnel: M. Reed — Annual reviews for the staff will be completed next week.

OMEC: J. Marshall — Report received as information.  $1000 was taken from the Disaster Relief Fund to send to the Presbyterian Church in Malibu, Ca that was destroyed in the fires in October.  January 6 is Sock and T-shirt Sunday.  White socks and T-shirts given by our congregation will go to the homeless.  Rockledge Presbyterian Church has indicated that they will be doing a Habitat for Humanity Project next year.  We will be contacting them about a joint project.  Operation Christmas Child was a success.  The Christmas Joy Offering will be collected the Sunday before Christmas.  Central Florida Presbytery has published a list of potential 2008 mission projects.  The list is available on the Presbytery website.  A written report was received as information.

Stewardship & Finance: D. Spellman — We continue to be behind in income for the year -- we are in the red $38K+.  It is projected that at the end of the year we will have a $30K+ shortfall.  The commission solicits suggestions for ways to save money and/or to raise funds.  Unless giving increases, it is projected that for 2008 we will have a budget deficit.  Staff members were asked to leave the meeting during the discussion of the 2008 budget.  After discussion, M/S/C to adopt the 2008 Riverside Presbyterian Church Budget as presented.  Staff members were invited to rejoin the meeting.

Care & Support: C. Schmitt — The next Blood Drive will be December 30.  Several members of the former Pastoral Partners group have been welcomed a members of the commission.  Written report received as information.

Education: M. Gibson — Report received as information.

Fellowship: J. Mustin — Report received as information.

DEACON’S REPORT:

As the Board of Deacons is also meeting tonight, there is no report.

NEW BUSINESS:

  • Rev. Robinson announced that the Acts 16:5 Initiative — Transformational Ministry -- will hold a workshop February 14 and 15 in Oviedo.  Cost s $20 per person plus $50 for meals.  He asked for volunteers to attend.

  • M/S/C to call a Special Meeting of Session December 23 at 10:15 am in the Fellowship Hall for the purpose of receiving new members.

  • M/S/C to call the Annual Congregational Meeting for January 20, 2008 to follow immediately after a single worship service at 10:00 AM.

  • M. Reed announced that the Spring Praise Band Fest group will be meeting on Monday to discuss plans for next year.

CLOSING BUSINESS:

  • Next Stated Meeting of Session — January 22, 2008 at 7:00 PM

  • Devotion and opening prayer for January — C. Schmitt

  • Opening Responsibility for January -- M. Reed, Closing Responsibility — R. Howard

  • Meeting closed with expressions of concern for members.

  • M/S/C to adjourn the meeting.  Meeting ended by all repeating the Lord’s Prayer.
