Welcome to Worship at Riverside!
Jesus took his disciples up the mountain one day to pray; as Jesus prayed his face changed and his clothes began to glow as bright as a flash of lightning. The disciples saw Jesus in his glory and heard God’s voice in the cloud. The disciples were confused, afraid and struck silent with awe. They knew they’d been in the presence of the divine—knew they’d had what we still call today a “mountaintop experience.”
The disciples suggested pitching their tents on the mountain. They wanted to camp out with Jesus on the mountain! But Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem. Jesus knew that the way to Easter resurrection was through the cross. Having had a glimpse of God’s glory revealed in Jesus, the disciples also came down the mountain and followed after Jesus.
Ash Wednesday (Feb. 10) marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is the season in the church where we journey with Jesus to the cross. We invite you to journey with us here at Riverside. Ashes will be offered twice on Ash Wednesday. In the morning between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to walk-up and drive-through traffic at the main entrance to the sanctuary. In the evening at 7:00 p.m. at a traditional Ash Wednesday worship service in the sanctuary. Sign up today for family-style Lenten suppers and studies; and make plans now to join us on Maundy Thursday for an Upper Room service including foot-washing and communion and on Good Friday for an afternoon prayer vigil.
Preparing for the journey,
